Stepping Slowly Into Spring

Just a little note to wish you all an enjoyable Easter break in some shape or form, whether you’re staying at home or going away, I’m hoping we can all welcome a bit of sunshine in our lives to uplift and restore. I’ll be resting, taking things slowly and nursing my new injury, so all things Yoga will start to pick up again next term.

Meanwhile, I thought to send out a little update on what’s been happening last term and what’s coming up, so grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy a read about all things with Living Your Yoga.

Restoring in supported shoulder-stand.

Last term flew by, and not without it’s ups and downs. Firstly, and most importantly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of those that have accommodated my injury and were happy to attend your yoga class online where I was unable to be in-person. It’s great that you’re able to maintain your practice within your yoga community whilst at home - thank you for being so flexible (in every way!)

I would like to say a huge thank you to the amazing staff at Newson Health who looked after me when I fainted and injured my foot a couple of weeks ago! They couldn’t do enough for me and made me feel so looked after, from the admin team, the nurses, GP’s and a sonographer! I was taken care of completely. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks resting with a couple of torn ligaments whilst gazing at the beautiful flowers the team have sent me - thank you team Newson Health.

On a personal level, my gorgeous children, my amazing parents, fabulous friends and caring clients have been checking in on me daily! The wonderful Andrea Ramus, Sports Massage Therapist, has checked in every day, taping my foot up and supporting me. I’ve had the amazing Emma Collins (Acupuncturist) treat me with Reiki (and do my washing!) as well as neighbours offering support. My folks have been ensuring myself and my children have meals and everything we need, and even my children have been cleaning and washing (lets hope that continues!) I can honestly say that I am incredibly grateful for all of the support I’ve received - huge thank you to everyone for all of your help.

I’ve learnt a lot in the last couple of weeks. Resting and recovering isn’t easy when my job and my home life is about supporting and nurturing others: I’m now tuning in to my quieter practices whilst I recover, reflecting on where life needs to change and using my subtler yoga tools to support my healing. Of course, all of these practices will be explored and shared at some point…it all takes the form of a cycle of research in some way. I’m grateful to have the time, support and knowledge to be able do this.

Little Reflection on Last Term…

Last term saw a busy schedule with both new and familiar faces; a fully-booked Well-Woman Yoga Afternoon Event; Dr Louise Newson’s latest book launch that I contributed to, and a brilliant Yoga retreat video created by my best friend Kat, founder of Black Belt Presence (I’ll add the link below for you to watch!) As well as announcing future retreats with Living Your Yoga in collaboration with a wonderful team of caterers and therapists including Sports Massage Therapist Andrea Ramus and Aromatherapist Rebecca Tracey. Ashtanga Yoga

Saturdays 7.30-9am

In-person & Online

A few in-person spaces have become available in our Saturday morning Ashtanga Yoga Classes. Ashtanga Yoga is my personal practice that I have studied for the best part of 23 years! It leans to a more dynamic form of a Hatha Yoga practice, with a fixed sequence of poses, with flowing movements between static postures, co-ordinated with breath. It’s a brilliant practice to build strength, focus, mental clarity, flexibility, create calm and uplift at the same time. It’s a very powerful practice. If you’re interested in trying out the practice or would like further information, do drop me an email:

info@livingyouryoga.co.uk

Well, that’s all for now.

Wishing everyone a really joyful Easter Break.

Much Love,

Lucy xx

A Little Bit More Light....

Despite the chilly air, Spring is around the corner: the bright yellow of the daffodils are beginning to show, days slightly lighter for longer, and it feels like nature is slowly awakening from it’s heavy slumber.

Living Your Yoga Well-Woman Retreat (Feb 2023)

Whilst nature has been in hibernation season, Living Your Yoga has been rather busy, from greeting the year with both new and familiar faces in class; filming for balance+; appearing on a balance+ Live with Dr Louise Newson and Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi discussing the importance of exercise (still available to watch on Balance+); Graduating from my 2 Year Yoga Therapy Training; and the first Living Your Yoga Well-Woman Retreat! A lot has happened already and the year ahead is looking bright with more events, retreats and classes to look forward to. Read on for more…

Hello 2023…

A warm welcome to the new faces with Living Your Yoga and welcome back to our regulars. It’s always great to return back to class after a little break and catch up with everyone’s news. I’ve shone a little highlight on our Monday Evening Online Class in this newsletter as it’s building up quite a community. Do spread the word about this class as it’s suitable for everyone.

It was lovely to start the year filming with Dr Louise Newson on balance+with a live discussion talking about exercise with inspirational Dr Hussain Al-Zubadi. The programme is still available to catch up on the balance+ app.

balance+ Live

I’m really happy to announce that I’ve graduated from my 2 Year Yoga Therapy Course with Yogacampus. I had the absolute joy to share these two years with an amazing group of women and teachers, with whom I hope to have lifelong contact with. We are now a group of qualified Yoga Therapists, scattered throughout the UK and Europe, so you’re never too far away from getting support from a Yoga Therapist.

Yoga Therapy really is quite a beautiful and honest approach in supporting you in life when it gets challenging or overwhelming. Yoga Therapy can take place in a 1:1 or a small group setting and it’s tools may help support anything from the physical ailments of musculoskeletal issues, to the mental and emotional distress that can be experienced during the menopause, anxiety, depression, grief…and can even be a healing anchor when having treatment or recovering from cancer. Yoga therapy can be a really healing tool for support in all aspects of life.

I have been working with many clients in a 1:1 setting and am due to begin a small group therapy course for peri-menopause & menopausal women after Easter.

If this is of interest to you, do drop me an email: info@livingyouryoga.co.uk

Newly qualified Yoga Therapists!

Thank you to the amazing group of women that attended Living Your Yoga’s first Well-Woman Retreat at The Cotswold Park Barns last month! It was utterly beautiful and such a pleasure to host such a fabulous group of women! I had the amazing help and support of my dear friends Kat and Andrea who helped make the retreat run so smoothly, helping make everyone feel welcome and settled, along with filming, massaging and cleaning up among the way!

Festive Greetings 2022

Well, that went quick! Did anyone see where 2022 went? I’ve been a little bit here, there and everywhere this year with yoga: from teaching to filming, studying to yoga travels and getting back outdoors and in nature whenever I can with my loved ones. It definitely feels like it’s time to wind down and ease into a restful festive season. So here’s a little bit of light reading about all things Yoga. I’d like to invite you to grab yourself a cuppa, a mince pie, put your feet up and enjoy a little read :)

Playing with props

First of all, I’d just like to say a big thank you to our Yoga community. Being able to offer both in-person and online classes, and for everyone to be so adaptable in attending both or either option. The beauty of having the online option is that you can still attend class when you’re on holiday or need to swap from your regular slot. I have really admired everyone’s commitment to their yoga practice - it’s really inspiring. Speaking of which, as the August Yoga Challenge took off so well, I’m going to create a January one too! I’ll update the whats app group. If you weren’t involved in this previously, but would like to join, do drop me a message and I’ll add you to the group. I will film a short practice and add it to the group. Each day you do the practice, you can sign off with a tick, a greeting, a photo, whatever works for you.

Living Your Yoga hosted two beautiful sell-out events this Autumn: Yoga Nidra in October and Well-Woman Yoga in November. Both events were catered for by the fabulous Cynthia from Desa Cafe in Leamington. We’ll be running more events in 2023, dates will be confirmed in a separate events newsletter.

Balance+ App

As many of you already know, I teach Yoga on Dr Louise Newson’s Balance+ App. I had the good fortune of presenting a daytime live stream for World Menopause Day in October. Now I’m excited to share that I’ll be co-presenting another live on Wednesday 4th January with Dr Louise Newson, in conversation with Marissa Hussain on exercise.

If you download the Balance App for free, you can have 7 days of Balance+ for free to catch up on previous live’s (including World Menopause Day) and all of the other Yoga, Pilates, Cooking Demonstrations, Discussions on Skin, Hair, Sexual Health and Weight Management to list a little of the content!

Dr Louise Newson’s Balance App was launched to better support and inform women as they move through the perimenopause, menopause and post-menopausal years, incorporating scientifically based medical and holistic support.

The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause

by Dr Louise Newson

Dr Louise Newson is releasing a new book in the Spring to better inform and empower women to get the best support they can during their menopausal years. It explores numerous treatment options including the complete guide to HRT; ways to improve libido, mental and physical health and the impact that menopause can have on careers, relationships and all aspects of our lives.

There have been many contributors to this book including Jane Simpson (Pelvic Floor Bible), Liz Earle, Joe Wicks, Kate Muir, Dr Rupy Aujla (Doctor’s Kitchen) to name a few, and I’m really honoured to announce that I am also a contributor, offering my take on how Yoga can best support perimenopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal health and wellbeing.

The books release date is on March 16th, but pre-booking is available :)

Writing for Midwifery Matters

I have also written an article for a brilliant magazine called Midwifery Matters on the importance of post-natal care for new mums. Yoga is a fantastic tool to support healing for Post-Natal care, both physically & psychologically. It was a great opportunity to write about this subject as it’s often overlooked or not even considered what with the excitement of a new baby arriving. But post-natal care is vital for women in order to feel supported, not only in healing the physical body after giving birth, but also in order to acknowledge the huge transformation that they move into, from maidenhood to motherhood. It shakes up your world on every level, there’s no going back in any way, shape or form: it’s a huge transformation physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Yoga is a powerful practice that can support a woman’s life cycle in any stage that she’s at.

I work with so many women, from pre-natal to post-menopause witnessing these transformations, and the power that yoga has in providing a space of support, healing, strength and accessing one’s own inner wisdom, that’s in all of us.

For more information about the magazine visit:

Yoga Therapy

I’m really happy to announce that I’ll be graduating from my Yoga Therapy course in January! It’s been a full on two years and I’d like to thank my partner, children and parents for their continued support in accommodating my weekends to London for training, late-night assignments, helping me with childcare and the general craziness that has been the life schedule for the last couple of years! I couldn’t have done it without their love, support and patience.

I’d also like to thank all of you who have supported me in this course, worked around my classes and 1:1’s in order for me to continue studying and hopefully become a better Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist!

I’m really grateful for having had this opportunity: I’d wanted to do this course for many years and it has been a fantastic experience. I’ve also had the good fortune in working alongside a fantastic group of trainee therapists and have learnt from some amazing teachers! It’s been very full on, but really worth every minute. I really hope that all of you who attend my classes or 1:1’s feel that you experience the benefits of the newfound knowledge that I’ve been absorbing over the years!

Well, that’s all for this year. If you’ve made it this far down the newsletter, firstly thank you! Secondly, please do leave a little heart at the bottom so that I know if you’ve liked the read. Thanks so much.

I’ll leave you with the lyrics to a Christmas song created in 1971 and it’s meaning that still speaks for today: a Christmas holiday song and anti-war ballad in one…

Wishing you all a beautiful festive season.

Much Love,

August Yoga Challenge

To keep our community connected and your practice supported throughout the Summer break, I set a fun little challenge of practicing 10 sun salutations a day. It was brilliant! We had a large what’s app group that we all checked in on each day to confirm our daily practice as a way to encourage and support one another. We had some brilliant photo’s of you in your practice, your practice area’s (sometimes beautiful holiday views); family, friends, pets and even your clients got involved on some practice days, we even had a wasp sting photo sharing the dedication to the cause! It was a real joy, and often very funny, to be part of this community!

One of our lovely regulars wrote a blog about her approach to the Sun Salutation challenge. Click on the link below - it’s a reflective and beautiful read. Thank you for sharing Denise :)

https://www.dcolehypnotherapy.co.uk/post/your-title-what-s-your-blog-about-4

I’ve added some photo’s below that were shared from our what’s app group.

From left: Dinah Siman; Me (Lucy Holtom); Claudia Brown

This years World Menopause Day took place on Tuesday 18th October. I was delighted to have been asked to be a presenter for the day on the Balance+ livestream where content was provided by the Balance+ team including: Yoga & Pilates Classes; a Cook Along; Q & A’s: an interview with Liz Earle… and of course, lots of fun and giggles.

The Balance+ app was launched in order to provide up to date information and support for all of your lifestyle needs; from movement to diet, sexual health to skin and hair care, advice to uplift spirits to support in your sleep. All of the team are experts in their field and share their knowledge in order to support those on their peri-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal journey. The Balance+ has a subscription fee that supports the Balance app to be free for everybody worldwide in order to have access to up to date scientifically-based information on menopause care, advice and support.

Dr Louise Newson founded the Balance App as a means to reach out to more people offering factual & accurate (non-opinionated) Peri-Menopause/Menopause information and guidance. Since opening, Dr Newson’s menopause clinic had been inundated with women seeking help during their Peri-Menopause & Menopause, and she recognised that there was minimal knowledge available to support women during this transition in their lives. So, Dr Newson founded fantastic teams both within the Newson Health Menopause Clinic and the Balance & Balance+ app, who all have the shared desire in supporting women, and their families, in transitioning through the peri-menopause & menopause.

To find out more information and support head to:

www.balance-menopause.com

You can also download the Balance App for free and Balance+ is free for a 7 day trial.

Yoga Therapy

As most of my regulars know, I’ve been in a very intensive training Yoga Therapy Diploma for nearly 2 years. It has has informed my practices, my teachings and my 1:1’s. I am better able to support my clients with all manner of health needs, challenges and requirements. It’s a continual learning journey, and undoubtably always will be, but something that I’m truly passionate about. Yoga therapy helps people look within, using yogic practices, in order to help themselves cope with life’s challenges, feel better within themselves, and empowered at their capacity to help heal themselves. Yoga therapy works hand in hand as a self-regulating tool independently, and also in harmony with medication and treatments.

I am due to graduate from the course in January 2023. I wanted to say thank you for your support and flexibility over the last two years! I’ve had to cancel and amend my schedule around my studies and you’ve all accommodated that, so thank you.

Yoga Therapy Training with Yogacampus :)

Christmas and Beyond…

There will be the usual 2 weeks break over Christmas, but term will finish slightly earlier due to other exciting work commitments which I look forward to sharing in my next newsletter!

I plan to set a January Challenge, organised in the same way as August’s challenge, so if you’re interested in joining in, drop me a message and I’ll create something for everyone to connect with.

Along with February’s Retreat, I’ll be booking another Yoga Nidra Event and a Spring Clean Well-Woman Yoga Event. Do message me if you’re interested in either event.

I have Living Your Yoga Vouchers available for Christmas Gifts for your loved ones (or for yourselves!) They can be used for events, 1:1’s or a termly payment - whatever you like! Drop me an email if you’d like to purchase one of these and I can post it out to you. (They’re also available electronically)

Gift Vouchers

Phew! I think that’s everything. Thank you for reading if you’ve made it this far!

Have a fabulous half term break and I look forward to seeing you all in November.

Much Love,

Lucy xx

Ps. I’ve been studying, practising and teaching and breathing a lot lately…Kate Bush sings about it best ;)

…...

Oh, let me breath (What are we going to do without?)

Quick - breathe in deep (We are all going to die without)

Oh, leave me something to breathe (What are we going to do without?)

Oh, leave me something to breathe (we are all going to die without?)

Oh God, please leave us something to breathe (What are we going to do without?)

Oh life is…

Breathing. Kate Bush.

What time is it? Summertime!

Hello! Welcome to my Summertime newsletter. I hope that you’re all able to take a bit of time out over the coming weeks, whether you’re away or at home, taking some rest and switching off from the noise of the outside world may be the best break we can take in the current climate. Hopefully you’ve found that your yoga community brings some life, light and grounding into your lives during such unpredictable & challenging times. Mixed Ability classes spent a lot of last term exploring numerous practices from nurturing meditations to remembering how to play with half & full handstands, shoulder-stands and headstands. We explored how inversions can make you feel, experiencing the support of partner work in some instances, and how we individually approach challenges that we may think are out of our reach (and then we discover that perhaps they are not :)) We always have lots of giggles in our Ashtanga Yoga Classes, whether there’s some spontaneous roly-poly’s or sharing funny stories, Saturday mornings are always fun, no matter how bleary-eyed we’re feeling! Well-Woman Yoga & Monday Evening Hatha Yoga Classes invite the mind and body to be soothed, nourished and settled, inviting a release of tension and an opportunity for deep rest.

Classes are both face-to-face and online: our community is still growing far and wide - everyone is welcome.

We have some exciting events planned for you during August and beyond…

Pre Natal 1:1’s & Couple Birth Preparation Sessions

Group pre natal & post natal classes are on hold at the moment, but I do run pre & post natal yoga 1:1’s both face to face and online - do contact me for more details.

Couples Birth Preparation Sessions are really unique sessions that I also teach privately in order to support both mum-to-be and birthing partner to prepare for labour. Often birthing partner can feel at a loose end when their partner is in labour, so this session is specifically designed to suit both. Practices include breath work, sounding, birthing postures and how partner can be a part of labour and best support the experience. These sessions have had great feedback in giving confidence to both parents-to-be.

“I loved our couple's birth prep workshop. It connected what I've learnt in my pre-natal classes with practical techniques my partner can support me with in labour. Now we've experienced the class together I feel much more confident about the birth. Before the workshop I'd told him how amazing Lucy was, and talked him through some of the techniques, but now we've practiced it together it's brought it all to life.” Charlotte.

In Other News…

Although this years Summer schedule looks quiet, there’s lots going on behind the scenes with Living Your Yoga! Including, more filming for the balance+ app; organising retreats for 2023 (let me know if you’re interested!), recording Audio Meditations, Yoga Nidra’s and Well-Woman Yoga Downloads. I’ll keep you updated when these will be released.

Don’t forget, you can also send Living Your Yoga Gift Vouchers to friends & family which can be exchanged for Weekly Classes, 1:1’s and Events!

Thank you to all of those that nominated & voted for LYY again with Muddy Stilettos Award - this year we made it to the finals which was a surprise after winning it last year! I didn’t expect to get that far again. Thank you, as ever, for all of your support! I’m always grateful.

That’s all for now… I thought I’d leave you with a beautiful poem by yung pueblo. I felt that this bit of writing really sums up how yoga works.

Wishing you all a beautiful Summer if I don’t see you.

Take care.

Much Love,

Lucy xxx

a body is a field of moving energy and a system of

information. as life continues its fluctuations, we tend

to gather attachments, burdens, and sorrows. we hold

them so tightly that they become embedded in the

body, causing blockages and disruptions in the flow of

our system, which can limit access to the best possible

version of ourselves - this sometimes manifests as

ailments or disease as well as a lack of belief in our

own power and a lack of understanding of the universe.

when we use purifying healing techniques, the body

begins releasing these knots of attachment, allowing

our field of energy to return to balance and move more

freely and powerfully. this causes changes in our body:

not just physical changes, such as the healing of disease

or ailments, but immaterial and internal changes as

well, such as believing in oneself more, the growth of

love, and the aspiration to grow into wisdom. really,

there is no separation between the mind and the body;

they move together as one under the leadership of our

mental contents.

Being Present

Breathe, relax and feel;

take time to slow down

the pace of life. Watch the

rise and fall of moods, the

birth and death of dreams.

Feelings and sensations seem

so real, yet they shift like

changing clouds, and flow

with the high tide out to sea

again. Allow it all to be, no

need to grasp or push away.

Present with each moment,

the whole of you, body, mind

and soul, opens to receive.

Love & Gratitude

I wrote this to you from Purple Valley Yoga Retreat in sunny Tenerife, where every morning was spent deepening my Ashtanga Yoga practice, and most afternoons were spent in practice, playing and exploring  backbends, inversions and meditation.

I chose to attend this yoga retreat to develop my personal practice, and in turn, to continue to deliver fresh and inspiring methods of yoga & meditation throughout all of my classes and individual tuitions. I look forward to sharing new practices and approaches next term :)

Along with deepening my Yoga & Meditation practice, I'd say I got a mighty fine and much needed rest, lots of joy and giggles shared with one of my dearest friends and a chance to be completely immersed in nature, all of which I am truly grateful for.

Pincha Mayurasana

My personal practice was very much focussed on living in the present moment, taking in everything through my senses: listening to the birds and the sea when outside walking, to absorbing the sound of the sweet chorus of ujjayi breath inside the shala (the practice space). I observed the beauty surrounding me, from the vibrant colours of the flowers in the street to the food on the table, from the smiles to the shapes our bodies were making during practice. My sense of smell became sensitive and uplifted by the scent of incense, the sea, my morning coffee; my taste buds were awoken by the taste of the delicious food, the salt of the sea from my swim. My awareness was heightened to the touch of assistance in a posture, the heat from the sun, the coolness of the sea… I’m grateful for all of these sensations and for the joy & experience that they brought.

I studied with Ashtanga Yogini and Buddhist scholar/practitioner Ellen Johannesen - a wonderful teacher with whom I’ve never actually studied with before. She is full of experience, knowledge and wisdom - I’m completely inspired & uplifted by her teachings and her presence - I plan to return to her teachings again one day.

I hope that you all found time to rest, laugh and enjoy the Easter break: finding moments of gratitude, being with loved ones, exploring new places or just taking time to reflect. There have been so many ups and downs in the last couple of years. Even since the beginning of this year, so many of you have had to adjust your lives due to work, health, loss, and changes of circumstances. I’ve had numerous conversations with many of you, in how your yoga practice has helped you navigate your way throughout life’s challenges and changes, creating stability, routine, self-care and connection to the self.

Due to so many changes and feedback, I have changed our weekly schedule a little, adding a new style of practice to the week. See details below.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Rumi
